I’ve heard the question many times: How do I know if I’m called to Pro-Life ministry?
It’s an apt question in a day and age where the Church is over-run with countless ministries that compete for our time and attention. But unlike many other ‘callings’, when it comes to Pro-life ministry, the great temptation of Christians today is to ignore the obvious.
Allow me to explain.
Imagine, if you will, that you are walking on a path beside a stream. As you make your way along the river bank, and marvel at the swiftly flowing current, you suddenly see a small child drowning out in the midst of the water. What do you do? Do you hope someone else will eventually come along and rescue them? Or do you call your friend who’s a life guard and “does this kind of thing for a living” to come save him? Of course not! You drop everything you’re doing, and risk your own life and limb to save the dying child.
But when it comes to the issue of abortion, many Christians do not understand the similarities, and ignore their place and responsibility in the rescue of these most helpless among us. Too many think that to be called to participate in Pro-Life ministry you have to see a light shine down from Heaven and say with a loud voice, “Go save the babies.” But the fact is, God has done so much more than that! He has sent down Jesus Christ, the very Word of God made flesh, to tell us that “the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10). “
How do you know if you are called to Pro-Life ministry?
My answer: Are children, whom God is knitting together in their mother’s wombs, being murdered in your city? Then rest assured brothers and sisters, you are called. You need not discern whether to save a child drowning in a stream — it’s obvious — imminent danger demands immediate response. Likewise, you need not ponder whether your prayers, your presence, and your voice are needed in Pro-Life ministry — it’s obvious — millions upon millions of children are “being taken away to death” (Pro. 24:11), and you’ve been given the ministry of Life.
“Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.’” – Matthew 9:37-38
=============================
If you are in the Louisville area and would like to get involved in the pro-life fight, there are a growing number of opportunities available to you.
First, I encourage everyone to take at least one morning to stand outside the local abortion facility and pray with us. Though this continual ministry is not for everyone, seeing and experiencing what goes on at these places is something that every Christian should have impressed upon their consciences. There is no other place in the world where Christians can intentionally go, knowing for certain that they will have the opportunity to share gospel-hope with a woman who is intent on killing her child, and be a witness for God’s steadfast love and justice. That alone is worthy of at least one visit.
I’m in the the process of working through some training for people interesting in counseling the women on the sidewalk, and organizing a prayer-presence throughout the week; as well as brain storming how we can get local Protestant churches plugged into to these girl’s lives. So stay tuned for more on that…
Other opportunities include volunteering at the amazing Women’s Choice crisis pregnancy clinic located right down the street from the abortion mill, or at Necole’s Place – which supports and encourages mothers who decide to keep their babies with classes, conseling, etc.
Every Christian can pray, and most of us can do far more than that. Let today mark the beginning of a legacy of life for you and your family.
