Dr. Mohler published a blog article yesterday on the age of the designer baby. It’s a great piece, and about as timely as they come.
But I’d like to call your attention to one thing:
It should be noted that Dr. Mohler did not use one verse of Scripture to back up his claims (at least in this article — I know he does elsewhere).
I don’t bring this up to disagree with him, because, like I said, I wholeheartedly agree with his conclusions. I merely want to show the double standard that we have set up in conservative evangelicalism when we discuss topics such as genetic engineering, as opposed to contraception. When we debate birth control, we hear piercing cries for “Christian liberty!”, no matter the overarching paradigm that is readily apparent in the contraceptive mentality. In matters of genetic engineering however, we are content to be convinced that our view of humanity is at stake, and make no mention of whether or not the Bible ever says “Thou shalt not genetically modify”…
I agree with Dr. Mohler, genetic modification will soon show us what “we really believe about human dignity and the value of human life” — but I will go one step further and claim that the evangelical use of contraception has made that commentary clear already. We want children our way, in our timing, and now in our image — or we do not want them at all.
We don’t have to wait to see where this mindset will lead. Just look around at all the Christians in line at the local pharmacy, buying as much contraception as they can carry…all to the glory of God, of course.
