I bought a book of Herman Melville’s Civil War poetry this afternoon, and wanted to share part of a poem he wrote in 1860-61 on the eve of the War Between the States entitled The Conflict of Convictions. One of the reasons I love reading and studying about the War of Northern Aggression is the way that so much of it is “timeless” - its poetry, its music, its battle for might and right, its personalities, and its biblical imagery (both intentional and unintentional on the part of the participants). Enjoy:
“On starry heights
A bugle wails the long recall;
Derision stirs the deep abyss,
Heaven’s ominous silence over all.
Return, return, O eager Hope,
And face man’s latter fall.
Events, they make the dreamers quail;
Satan’s old age is strong and hale,
A disciplined captain, gray in skill,
And Raphael a white enthusiast still;
Dashed aims, at which Christ’s martyrs pale,
Shall Mammon’s slaves fulfill?
(Dismantle the fort,
Cut down the fleet-
Battle no more shall be!
While the fields for fight in eons to come
Congeal beneath the sea.)”

“Northern Agression”?!
What’s that supposed to mean?!
For the record, we are participating in a Civil War reenactment next month. You’ll be pleased to know that our second son (we have 5) has chosen to be a ‘Rebel’.
Also, we purchased the DVD set of Ken Burn’s Civil War documentary (very well done, although I’m only on the 2nd DVD out of 4) and I can’t watch it without crying. There certainly was strong conviction on boths sides and our losses were horrific. Another powerful documentary I highly reccomend is “Lincoln and Lee at Antietam”. Bring some Kleenex!

what a beautiful poem!
just put in a new theme at heady musings… lemme know what you think.
and cambridge is lovely. wish you were here.
and one more thing…do you think henry van til’s calvinistic concept of culture would be helpful for me in trying to come up with a Christian definition of art and/or aesthetic experience?

Gen-
I liked your family before, but you’ve even gone up a couple of notches now! lol. I’ll have to check out those documentaries though, sounds pretty cool. btw, tell number 5 I’m proud of him!
J-mac-
love the theme bro, and had absolutely no idea you were blogging your trip over there. i’ve had like zero time to read other blogs this summer (unless they’ve linked me or something…not that i’m implying anything…lol), but i plan to carve out some to keep abreast of your comings and goings. I think the crew from Southern Seminary is over there right now, so you may try to track ‘em down. If you want, i’ll shoot you my professor’s email who is over there and you can hook up with them or something. just let me know.
yeah, and as far as van til’s book, i’m not really “reading” it at the moment. i started the first chapter the night i filled out the side bar and have been side tracked ever since. welcome to my life! but yeah, sounds like a good read any way. email Dr. Halla at Souther (if he’ll ever email you back…lol) and he may help too!
