As I stood in line at the Lifeway Bookstore today, the gentleman in front of me informed the cashier, “Bookstore sales are like crack for theology students.” Basically, we can’t pass them up…ever. lol.
And for better or for worse, he’s pretty right on. In the last week, I’ve encountered two bookstore sales and didn’t make it out of the place without buying some theological-literary candy. Here are the new additions to the Library of W.Hank Balch:
The Minor Prophets (vol. 1 and 2 - An expositional commentary) - James Montgomery Boice
Words to Winners of Souls - Horatius Bonar
The Great Exchange: My Sin for His Righteousness - Jerry Bridges & Bob Bevington

You know, I’m not a seminary student and I’ve been amassing quite a library just from Amazon.com. Of the books you’ve recently bought I’ve read “When Sinners Say I Do” from cover to cover and alot of “Sherpherding a Child’s Heart”. Both are pretty good reads, “When Sinners Say I Do” is a great read BEFORE marriage. The only part of “Shepherding a Child’s heart” is sometimes I find Tripp’s style of discipline a bit too harsh (at least for my 14 month old, I’ve spanked her a total of 2 times). Parenting is something intensely difficult and I don’t think there is every a perfect manual for it. I think you just have to have the Holy Spirit guide your actions and give you wisdom and discernment in how to raise your children. What works for one may not work for another.

I think that Words to Winners of Souls is my favorite book of all time. Each chapter is so convicting and helpful. Just to give you a taste of how good it is, there is a chapter called Ministerial Confessions where a group of Puritans got together and confessed their shortcomings to one another. That chapter alone is worth the book.

Dog…I succumbed to this today…took a big hit on the seminary crack pipe (that’s as explicit as I can be with drug references — other than this I am totally sheltered). Got myself the following:
-God’s Lesser Glory by Bruce Ware (on clearance)
-Richard Baxter on Conversion (on clearance)
-Beyond the Bounds (on clearance)
-Their God is Too Small (not on clearance…what can I say? I got carried away.)
-The Supremacy of God in Preaching by Piper (on clearance)
Boom. Ware’s book and Beyond the Bounds are going to contribute to my paper for Systematic. That’s my exucse. The other ones were evidence that your above post is true.

Man! My little library pales in comparison to yours! hahaha. Nonetheless I own 4 of your new books! Btw, I realized that you got the Harvey book. Read it bro (though I can’t guarantee the wife will come right after you finish. I speak of experience!

By-cracky, it’s not a book, but for a theological high check out this blog:

Here’s a blurb from his site:
>> Welcome to TR
“But is it true?”
This question was posed to me years ago by Dr. Win Corduan in a class at Taylor University. He challenged me to test out the Christian faith and determine if it was true or not. Since that time, apologetics, or defending the Christian faith, has been a passion of mine.
This blog is dedicated to helping people learn about the evidences for Christianity as well as helping Christians be better able to defend Jesus Christ against so many philosophies that are constantly springing up and do not meet Paul’s criteria of being “true and reasonable”.Dr. Corduan has written a book entitled No Doubt About It. For the average person, this is one of the best books on apologetics that you can find. There are some deep parts that need to be read a few times, but it is well worth the effort. The chapters on the nature of truth, the existence of God and the problem of evil are excellent. The vignettes at the beginning and end of each chapter really help to make the content of the chapter practical. You can get your copy of No Doubt About It by clicking on the link to the right. Corduan continues to teach at Taylor University, you can visit his blog by clicking here.<<
Believe it or not, this guy is one of the ‘frozen chosen’ and a neighbor of mine. I think you would enjoy his material greatly.
