I Interrupt This Break To Issue A Challenge To Seminarians: Are You Your Brother’s Keeper

My blog-break is going well, but this issue was pressing enough for me to make an exception to the rule.

I would like to publicly issue a part-challenge, part-exhortation, part-plea to my Southern Baptist Seminary brethren on behalf of a campaign that is underway here in Louisville that is intent on putting an end to the murder of countless children due to abortion. Unbeknownst to many of you, about a week and half ago a group of pro-lifers began a 40 Days For Life – Louisville campaign at the local abortion clinic (EMW Women’s Surgical Center) downtown on 138 West Market Street. Since that time, from 5am-10pm, 7 days a week there have been volunteers in front of the clinic, praying, fasting, and counseling mothers and fathers not to murder their unborn children. And God is showing himself mighty in countless ways! I myself have seen 3 mothers change their minds about killing their children.

I know many of you who will read this have never set foot near an abortion clinic, yet still firmly believe that God abhors this practice of abortion, and you know that the only hope for these children and their parents is the redemptive love of Jesus Christ. You know that there is power in prayer. You know that there is power in fasting. You know all these things are true because there is power in the blood of Jesus Christ.

But brothers and sisters, simply knowing these things are true has ABSOLUTELY NO EFFECT on the Kingdom of Christ around us. If we do not engage in battle, all the armor in the world is but vanity upon vanity. We, as the ambassadors of Christ to a wicked and depraved generation, do not have the luxury of simply knowing these things. The psalmist said this about God, “He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the needy. From oppression and violence he redeems their life, and precious is their blood in his sight (Psa 72:13-14).” Ask yourself truthfully, can the same be said of you?

If there ever was a time to live out a Psalm 72 heart, in a Proverbs 24:10-12 kind of way, it is NOW and it is HERE:

“If you faint in the day of adversity,
your strength is small.
Rescue those who are being taken away to death;
hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter.
If you say, “Behold, we did not know this,”
does not he who weighs the heart perceive it?
Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it,
and will he not repay man according to his work?”
- Proverbs 24:10-12
Typically, I am out at the clinic daily, anywhere from about 2pm-5pm. Saturday mornings, they take the mothers very early so I try to be there from 7am-10am. If you are interested in joining me, I would love to have you, or if you would just like to go down there another time by your self, or with your family – do whatever the Lord puts on your heart. For more information about 40 Days for Life and for directions to the clinic, you can go here, or shoot me an email here. I’ll almost guarantee you, one trip to the clinic, and you will never be the same.

I’ll close with the words of the late Leonard Ravenhill, “The question is not were you challenged, the question is were you changed…
